Private Vilnius and Trakai route
Vilnius And Trakai Private Tour
Two medieval Lithuanias in one private day: Vilnius, whose UNESCO Old Town is one of the largest in northern Europe — Gates of Dawn, baroque towers, a university running since 1579 — and then 28 kilometres west to Trakai, where a red-brick island castle sits in the middle of a lake looking exactly the way castles are supposed to.

WHAT YOU SEE AND HEAR
A baroque capital and a castle in a lake
Vilnius earns its half of the day street by street: the Gates of Dawn with the chapel whose icon of the Madonna draws Catholic and Orthodox pilgrims alike; the university founded in 1579, its thirteen courtyards hiding behind one modest gate; Cathedral Square under Gediminas' hill; and St Anne's, the flamboyant Gothic church Napoleon — so the legend insists — wanted to carry home to Paris on his palm. Uzupis, the self-declared artists' republic with its own April-published constitution, supplies the wink.
Then the road west, half an hour, and the scenery changes register: Trakai, the lake-country capital of medieval Lithuania, with the Island Castle of the 14th-century Grand Dukes standing red-brick and improbable in Lake Galve. Restored in the 20th century, it is the country's most photographed building and deserves to be.
Trakai keeps a living rarity too: the Karaim community, settled here by Grand Duke Vytautas around 1398, whose wooden houses line the street to the castle and whose kibinai — hot, hand-crimped meat pastries — are the natural answer to "where should we have lunch?"

Tour style
The balanced day
Vilnius walked properly, then Trakai with castle-and-lake time: the version this page describes.
Vilnius-led
More capital, tighter castle: for guests who want the city's churches and courtyards in depth.
Trakai-led
More lake, more castle, an unhurried kibinai lunch; Vilnius as the elegant prologue.
Vilnius only
The straight recommendation when your schedule is short — the capital deserves hours, not leftovers.
PAID SEPARATELY
What's not in the price
- Trakai Island Castle tickets are paid separately.
- Lunch and kibinai in Trakai.
- Extra Vilnius layers (Uzupis deep-dive, more churches, viewpoints) beyond the day's frame.
WHY YOU'LL LIKE IT
Why these two belong in one day
- Capital and castle show two different medieval Lithuanias — baroque city power and lake-fortress power — 28 km apart.
- The Island Castle is the country's defining image, and the lake setting is half of it: time outside the walls is protected.
- The Karaim street and its kibinai turn the lunch stop into part of the history.
- One guide, one thread: the Grand Duchy connects everything you see all day.
- For the rest of what we run in the city, see Vilnius private tours.

QUESTIONS WE OFTEN HEAR
Before you book this tour
Capital, castle and the road between — the essentials.
How long is the day?
About five hours: the Vilnius Old Town walk, the drive and Trakai's castle-and-lake time. It's an efficient day rather than a slow one — if you want either half unhurried, a Vilnius-only tour or extra hours is the better answer.
Are castle tickets included?
No. Trakai Island Castle tickets are paid separately.
How much walking is it?
Vilnius is a genuine walk on old pavements; Trakai adds footbridges and castle stairs. The pace bends to the group.
What are kibinai and do we have time?
The Karaim pastry Trakai is famous for — and yes, the route protects lunch instead of apologising for it.
Can this start from the airport?
By request, yes — say arrival times and luggage needs and the day builds around them.
