The Curonian Spit is the Baltic's strangest landscape: a sandbar nearly a hundred kilometres long and in places under a kilometre wide, pine-forested, dune-backed, with the lagoon flat on one side and open sea on the other. UNESCO listed it in 2000 as a landscape humans and wind built together — the forests were planted by hand to stop the dunes from eating the villages, which they had already done more than once.
The ferry from Klaipeda to Smiltyne takes about five minutes and does the work of a border: city behind, national park ahead. The full-day version drives the Spit's length to Nida, the old fishermen's village near the dunes' most dramatic stretch — the Parnidis Dune, 52 metres of bare sand with a sundial on top, and Thomas Mann's summer cottage from 1930 on the hill above the lagoon.
En route, Juodkrante offers the Hill of Witches: a forest trail lined with dozens of carved wooden devils, witches and folk-tale figures — Lithuanian mythology given chainsaw form. The route finishes with Klaipeda's half-timbered old town and Theatre Square if time smiles. The all-aboard margin is fixed before any of it is promised.
