What's included

  • Private car with driver for the Oslo legs, door to door.
  • Bergen Railway tickets Geilo–Myrdal and the Flam Railway down to the fjord.
  • The two-hour Naeroyfjord cruise, Flam to Gudvangen.
  • Flamsbana Museum in Flam and bottled water in the car.

Tour style

  • Four kinds of transport in a 15.5-16.5-hour day; each leg and the late return are shown before booking.

PAID SEPARATELY

What's not in the price

  • Lunch in Flam and the optional dinner stop — the harbour cafes are good and the prices are Norwegian.
  • Gratuities, your hotel, and anything before 08:00 or after drop-off.
  • This is a full 16-hour round trip. A shorter Sognefjord plan needs an overnight or a different starting point.

WHY YOU'LL LIKE IT

Why this beats doing it yourself

  • The best part of the route has no road — Myrdal can't be reached by car, and Naeroyfjord is best seen from the water. The rail-and-boat middle is the point, not a compromise.
  • One pre-arranged chain instead of booking each leg yourself: rail and cruise times aligned before the date, with the Oslo road legs handled door to door.
  • Door to door: the car leaves when you're ready and takes you home while the E16 does its five dark hours.

PROGRAM

Tour overview

Tour overview

08:00 — Oslo. Pickup at your hotel and a private car west through the Hallingdal valley — about 3.5 hours to Geilo, a mountain town at nearly 800 metres, with a comfort stop.

Geilo to Myrdal by the Bergen Railway. Just over an hour on Northern Europe's highest mainline, across the edge of the Hardangervidda plateau to a station no road reaches.

Myrdal to Flam by the Flam Railway. Twenty kilometres and 863 metres down, about an hour, with the photo stop at the Kjosfossen waterfall built into the timetable.

Flam, about 1.5 hours. Lunch by the harbour at your own pace; the Flamsbana Museum next to the station is included.

Flam to Gudvangen by fjord cruise, about 2 hours. Aurlandsfjord first, then the narrow UNESCO-listed Naeroyfjord — about 250 metres wide at its tightest, with walls rising well over a kilometre.

Gudvangen and Stalheim. Your car meets you at the pier; a short climb to the Stalheim viewpoint over the Naeroydalen valley.

Stalheim to Oslo. About five hours on the E16 with a dinner stop on request. Hotel drop-off around midnight.

QUESTIONS WE OFTEN HEAR

Before you book this tour

Season, timing and logistics — the short answers.

Is 16 hours realistic?

The middle of the day runs on published rail and boat timetables, so it can't drift; the driving legs have buffer built in. Expect 15.5–16.5 hours depending on your hotel and the evening traffic into Oslo.

Not sure sixteen hours is your format? The Oslofjord cruise, this day and the three-day route are compared in one place.

Can we do this in winter?

This round trip runs April to mid-October, while the fjord cruise keeps its full schedule. For winter dates, ask us — the answer is usually a two-day version with an overnight, which is a better trip in the dark months anyway.

What is included?

The private car on the Oslo legs, Bergen Railway and Flam Railway tickets, the Naeroyfjord cruise and the Flamsbana Museum. Lunch and gratuities are not included.

Is it suitable for children or older travellers?

Yes, with the caveat of the long day and the late return. Every leg is seated, none exceeds 3.5 hours, and the transport keeps changing — which does more against boredom than any guide can. Infant seats are available for the car; the route is not wheelchair-accessible.

What if the weather turns?

Trains and the cruise run rain or shine — fjord weather is half the show. If an operator cancels a leg, we first offer a workable reroute or another date. Refunds follow the cancellation terms of the services booked for your day.

We're on a cruise call in Oslo — can we make it?

No. Sixteen hours doesn't fit a port call, and we won't pretend it does. See our Oslo shore excursions for days that end when your ship needs you back.
