WHAT YOU SEE AND HEAR

Another country, two hours across the water

The Gulf of Finland is the Baltic's busiest short cut: two hours on a large, comfortable ferry and the skyline changes from Engel's white neoclassicism to a wall of medieval towers. Tallinn's Old Town — UNESCO-listed, ringed by walls — is the kind of place other cities build theme parks to imitate.

Your guide meets you at the terminal and gives you the real thing for three hours: Town Hall Square under the 1404 town hall, the merchant and guild houses of the Hanseatic years, the climb to Toompea with the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the viewing platforms over the red roofs, and Kadriorg — the park Peter the Great laid out in 1718 — as the route and hours allow.

Then the ferry home, with the walls sinking into the sea behind you and your driver waiting in Helsinki. It is a long day with four hours at sea in it, and it makes no secret of that: the crossing is part of the trip, not a means to it.

What's included

  • Private transfer between your Helsinki hotel and the ferry terminal, both ways.
  • Ferry tickets for both crossings.
  • Private guide in Tallinn for the 3-hour Old Town tour.

Tour style

The classic ferry day
Transfer, crossing, three guided hours, crossing, transfer: the full loop, timed around the ferry schedule.

Old Town on foot
The guided hours spent inside the walls: Toompea above, merchant town below, viewpoints in between.

A gentler pace
Cobblestones and slopes are real; say the word and the route flattens, shortens or adds a vehicle in Tallinn.

PAID SEPARATELY

What's not in the price

  • Lunch and coffee — Tallinn's Old Town does both with conviction.
  • Tower, church and museum tickets are optional and paid separately.
  • Anything the duty-free deck talks you into.

WHY YOU'LL LIKE IT

Why the crossing is worth the day

  • Two capitals in one day, with the logistics — transfers, tickets, timings — already solved.
  • Tallinn's Old Town is one of northern Europe's best-preserved medieval centres; three focused hours cover it properly.
  • The guide meets you at the terminal, so the hours ashore are spent in the town, not finding it.
  • The ferry itself is part of the experience: decks, sea air and the two skylines at either end.
  • For a Finland-only day, compare Helsinki and Suomenlinna or the Porvoo private day.

Terminal, crossing, and your driver waiting on the Helsinki side.

QUESTIONS WE OFTEN HEAR

Before you book this tour

The timing of a two-capital day.

How much of the day is at sea?

About four hours of the eight. The crossing is scenic and comfortable, but if sea time isn't your idea of a day out, a Helsinki day suits better.

Are ferry tickets really included?

Yes — both crossings, plus the Helsinki hotel transfers and the guided Tallinn hours.

Do we need passports?

Bring travel documents; both cities are in the Schengen area, but ferries and ID checks follow their own logic.

What if the group walks slowly?

Tallinn is cobbled and Toompea is a climb; tell us and the guided route adapts rather than pretends.

Can we stay longer in Tallinn?

The day is built around the ferry schedule; if Tallinn deserves more of your trip, ask about the overnight version instead.
