Two towns, one wall, seven centuries
Tallinn's trick is that its Old Town — UNESCO-listed, still ringed by walls and towers — was for most of its history two rival towns: the nobles and bishops up on Toompea, the Hanseatic merchants below, each with its own laws, walls and locked gates between them. The slope you climb between the viewpoints is the old frontier.
The lower town is the Hanseatic showpiece: Town Hall Square under the town hall of 1404, the oldest surviving in the Baltic region, with the Old Thomas weathervane on duty since 1530; the Raeapteek on the square's edge, a pharmacy that has been serving customers since 1422; guild houses, merchant facades and the crooked St Catherine's Passage where the craft workshops still work.
Toompea answers with the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral of 1900, the castle where Estonia's parliament sits, and the platforms — Kohtuotsa, Patkuli — where the whole red-roofed town arranges itself for your camera. Your guide connects the two towns' stories, and the centuries of Danish, German, Swedish, Russian and Estonian hands the keys passed through.

How far is the Old Town from the cruise port?
Close — the walk in is part of the route, and the return margin is planned before anything else is added.
Are entrances included?
The route is primarily outdoors. Tower, church and museum interiors are optional, with admission paid separately.
How hard is the walking?
Cobblestones throughout and one real slope up to Toompea. The route bends around mobility needs when we know them early.
Is 2.5–3 hours enough?
For the walled town, yes, comfortably. Kadriorg or a longer craft-lane wander deserve the extended versions.
Summer crowds?
Real, on cruise mornings. A private guide's main job that day is choosing the lanes the groups don't use.
