Fjord scenery does not make the return journey disappear. A ship call needs a conservative return margin; a hotel-based day can use a different route and a different pace.

Which Fjord Route Fits Your Starting Point?
Five routes, four starting harbours — and where you wake up decides more than the scenery does. From Bergen the fjords begin within the hour. In Flam you are already inside one. In Geiranger the fjord is a given — the only decision is how far above it to stand. Oslo is the outlier: from there the western fjords are a sixteen-hour commitment, worth every hour, but only if you have them all.

Seasons worth knowing before you fall for a route: the bike descent below Myrdal runs 2 May to 9 October, Dalsnibba opens when the snow decides, and the sixteen-hour Oslo day runs April to mid-October — in winter it wants a night in the middle. Off-season, boat and train timetables thin out everywhere; the Bergen ferry day follows the local ferry clock.
